Edvard Munch (1863-1944) is so famous for his paintings of angst in the human condition that his earlier very beautiful images of landscapes and people are often overlooked. In Norway, staying with generous friends Tore and Turid at their summer cottage, the bounty of summer is everywhere – from the luscious cherries and beautiful flowers to people just having fun enjoying the fjords in the sunshine. In Denmark, we stayed with another wonderful friend, Mete in her farmhouse on Bornholm, where we were reacquainted with one of my favourite artists, Oluf Host (1884-1966) at a retrospective exhibition there. Surely the beginning of the modernists.
